This means new health, mental health, and substance use coverage for adults is coming soon! Beginning January 1, 2019 hundred of thousand of Virginians will have new coverage and protection from the need to worry about getting sick or having an accident.

Who Is Eligible For New Health Coverage for Adults?

It is important know that Medicaid rules have changed, and anyone who has applied for coverage in the past and been rejected should try again. Across Charlottesville City, Albemarle, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa, and Nelson Counties, it is estimated that 10,000 residents will be newly eligible for this health coverage.

Any low-income adult under age 65, with or without children, who meets the income requirements, and is not already enrolled in Medicare, may be eligible for this new coverage.  Financial eligibility is based upon income and family size, and residents can check to see if they may be eligible on an on-line screening tool.

What Services Are Covered?

This coverage includes a wide array of services, including doctor visits for primary and specialty care, hospital stays, behavioral health care, prescription drugs, laboratory and X-ray services, maternity and newborn care, home health services, rehabilitative services, family planning, preventative and wellness services and more. People with complex medical needs that limit their daily living will receive additional care coordination support.

How Do You Apply?

The application period for new health coverage began November 1, 2018. There are multiple ways to sign up for coverage:

  • By phone by calling the Cover Virginia Call Center at 1-855-242-8282 or VDSS Enterprise Call Center at 1-855-635-4370
  • Online by visiting
  • In person by visiting their local Department Of Social Services

How Can I Help Others Get Enrolled?
