Region Ten Staff Profile: Carolyn Bowman

Every month Region Ten provides a profile of our staff members during commemorative months so that the community has a sense of the unique backgrounds and stories our staff bring to the people we serve.

Name and Position at Region Ten: Carolyn Bowman, Clinician II (Resident in Counseling), Child and Family Outpatient

Where are you from:  I am from Panama.
I was born in Kentucky and grew up in Panama from the age of 3 to 14. When I say I am from Panama it means more than where my mom was from. Panama was my home during some of the most formative years of my life, shaping much of who I am from memories, friendships, my understanding of family and community, the way I speak, the food I love, the music, and the way I see the world. It’s the place that holds my childhood, my memories, and a huge part of my identity.

What drew you to the mental health field?
I think my interest in mental health really started with my own experience growing up between cultures. When I later experienced American culture more fully, I became very aware of the differences in family relationships, communication, expectations and ideas about independence. That experience made me curious about how much culture and family systems influence who we become and the impact it has in our lives.

What are some of the highlights over your professional career?
The biggest highlight of my professional career at Region Ten is using my bilingual skills to help serve Hispanic/Latino families in our community. I’ve always wanted to speak Spanish in my work environment, and I truly feel that I am now using it with purpose. Language is a barrier for many, and if I can help break down that wall for mental health care to feel accessible, and for them to feel safe and culturally understood, that’s exactly the kind of impact I want to make.

What do you enjoy about your work at Region Ten?
What I enjoy about my work at Region Ten is the support from the C&F team! There is something special about working alongside people who support each other as we work toward the same goal. I really appreciate the training opportunities as they give us a chance to grow our skills and learn from one another. I also enjoy my consumers and witnessing their growth which is a reflection of the support provided at Region Ten.

What does Hispanic Heritage Month mean to you?
To me Hispanic Heritage Month means knowing that we can honor and embrace/celebrate our heritage while also embracing other parts of who we are without having to choose between cultures. Hispanic Heritage month also means recognizing and honoring the history and contributions of Hispanic and Latino people and their impact to our community/society.
